On the DunesA sandboard looks like a snowboard but is specifically built (or modified) for sand. Key differences include:
Prone boarding (lying face down): This is the recommended starting point for beginners. You lie on the board, chest down, and push off from the dune's crest. Steering is done by shifting your weight and dragging a foot. Speeds are exhilarating and the risk of injury is minimal since you are already close to the surface.
Standing boarding: Once you are comfortable prone, guides can set up bindings for a standing run. The technique closely resembles snowboarding — weight on the back foot to initiate, edge control to turn. The learning curve is steeper, but the feeling of carving down a dune face while standing is extraordinary.
Desert safari operators in Dubai use dunes in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and the Al Lahbab "Big Red" dune area southeast of the city. The best dunes for sandboarding are those with:
Your safari guide will assess dune conditions on the day and select the appropriate face for the group's experience level.
Our morning desert safari is ideal for sandboarding: cooler temperatures make the climbing between runs far less exhausting, and the softer morning light photographs the activity beautifully. The shared desert safari includes sandboarding in the golden pre-sunset window — spectacular visually, though slightly warmer in summer months.
Sandboarding in Dubai's desert is the kind of activity that adults and children alike talk about for years after. Book your desert safari with MyDubaiSafarii and we will make sure the boards are waxed, the dunes are ready, and the camera is pointed in the right direction when you make your run.
No. Sandboarding is accessible to complete beginners. The sand is slower and more forgiving than snow, and most people start on their feet after just a few runs on their stomach. Guides provide boards and a basic technique briefing before you start.
The boarding itself is not strenuous. The demanding part is climbing back up the dune after each run — loose sand makes the uphill walk harder than it looks. Comfortable shoes with grip and reasonable fitness for the climbing sections will help.
Most first-timers start lying prone (face down) on the board, which is much easier to control and still generates good speed. Standing sandboarding uses bindings and a stance similar to snowboarding. Your guide will recommend starting prone and progressing to standing if you feel comfortable.
Wear light, comfortable clothing that covers your legs to prevent sand burn during wipeouts. Closed-toe shoes are essential — sandals will fill with sand and fly off on the descent. Sunglasses protect your eyes from sand spray. Avoid anything loose that could catch the wind.
